Chronic pain is a major public health issue. The National Institutes of Health’s National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) estimates that 100 million adults in the US suffer from chronic pain at a cost of $560-$635 billion annually in healthcare and lost productivity. A 2015 study published in Pain Practice and conducted at Henry Ford Health Care System (Detroit, MI) found that chronic pain costs a healthcare system an average of $32,000 per patient, annually. The highest costs were associated with musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions.
