Hypoplastic kidney, unilateral

This is a young woman scanned at 36 weeks of gestation. Her first two ultrasounds were normal. The current scan showed a normal left kidney. The right kidney was hypoplastic and hydronephrotic. Transverse view of both kidneys. Note the difference in cross-section:

The cortico-medullar differenciation of the two kidneys seems normal.



The baby was delivered normally. A postnatal sonogram was done on day 3, which confirmed the anomaly that was seen prenatally. The serum creatinine level was normal.
