Miguel Pérez Carreño Hospital. Caracas. Venezuela.
A 34-year-old G2P0 presented to our hospital at 18 weeks of pregnancy due to a spinal malformation. Ultrasound investigation revealed multiple malformations: an omphalocele; a right hydronephrosis; deformation of the right leg and missing of the left leg; a cervicothoracic and a lumbosacral kyphoscoliosis. Anatomopathological study found: a 9 cm long male fetus with an omphalocele; an equinovarus right foot and an amelia of the left leg; the scoliosis; and a short umbilical cord with marginal insertion. Genetic study revealed normal karyotype (46, XY). The findings were consistent with amniotic band syndrome. Here are some of the images we obtained.
Images 1, 2
. Transverse 2D scan of the skull at the level of binocular diameter showing an amniotic band in front of the fetal face (left); and 2D scan showing bowed, deformed right femur of the fetus (right).
Images 3, 4
. 2D scans showing deformed lumbar (left) and cervical (right) fetal spine.
Images 5, 6
. 2D transverse scan showing an evisceration of the abdominal content in front of the abdomen (left); transverse scan of the lower abdomen showing deformed mass of visceral organs and of urinary bladder.
Images 7
. 2D scan showing a dense amniotic band connected to the disfigured lower part of the fetus.
Images 8, 9
. Pathological specimens.
Images 10
. Pathological specimen.
